Summary:
Terminal males are blue on the upper half of the body, and and abruptly white lower half, with several narrow dark stripes from behind the upper part of the eye to the end of the gill cover. Larger intermediate phase fish have a dusky orange to violet to blue-green upper half, and an abruptly paler on lower half, with a darker wide band from the front of the snout through the eye, ending in a dark spot on the rear of the gill cover. Smaller individuals are orangish with two white stripes on the head above and below the eye. The iris is reddish orange.

Distribution

Recorded in Australia from Holmes Reef in the Coral Sea, 150 km east of Cairns, to off Danger Point, Queensland, with juveniles as far south as Sydney, New South Wales. Inhabits rubble and hard bottoms in depths of 8-15 m.
