Summary:
A coppery sweeper with a broad dark brown band along the anal-fin base, a dark border on the upper and lower margins of the caudal fin and no broad black posterior border. In Western Australia, this species may have been misidentified as Pempheris schwenkii (see Remarks section on next tab)

Distribution |
Houtman Abrolhos Islands to the Dampier Archipelago, Western Australia - and even further south to Rottnest Island (Hoschke et al. 2019). Elsewhere the species is widespread in the Indo-west Pacific from the Red Sea to the NW coast of Australia, but not in coastal waters and islands of Indonesia, NE Australia, and the Andaman Sea. Dirk Hartog Island to Cassini Island, Western Australia (see Koeda et al. 2014). Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, subtropical, Indian Ocean and Red Sea (see Koeda et al 2014). |

Remarks |
Koeda et al. (2014) suggested that this species has previously been misidentified in Western Australia as Pempheris schwenkii. However, The distributions of the two species are believed not to overlap according to Randall et al. (2014) who suggested that P. tominagai is endemic to the Red Sea. Although they did not discuss Australian material, they implied that it might be P. schwenkii. |

Etymology |
The species is named tominagai for the Japanese ichthyologist Yoshiaki Tominaga, who contributed to the taxonomy and morphology of Pempheridae. |
