Summary:
A whitish to pale yellowish deepwater butterflyfish with a black bar through the eye, a diagonal bar from the top of the head to behind the pectoral fin base, and a broad diagonal black area on the rear of the body.

Distribution

Recorded at Rowley Shoals, Western Australia and Holmes Reef in the Coral Sea off Queensland. The species occurs elsewhere in the Western Pacific, usually in depths of 20-80 m, although individuals have been seen as shallow as 8 m. 
The species usually occurs in pairs on steep or undercut outer reef drop-offs, often in areas with abundant gorgonians and black coral, usually below 40 m.

Dorsal fin XIII, 18-19; Anal fin III, 15-16; Pectoral fin 16; Lateral line scales 35-37.
Snout length 2.8-3.0 in HL. Body depth 1.6-1.7 in SL
