Distribution

Near Palm Island and Low Isles, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, east-Indo-west Pacific.
Inhabits deep muddy slopes in areas with strong currents, usually at depths below 15 m. Adults are solitary or occur in pairs, while juveniles form small groups.

Oxymetopon compressus Chan 1966, Japan. J. Ichthyol. 14(1-3): 2, fig. 1. Type locality: Taitam Bay, about 1500 yards northwest of Beaufort Island, Lemma Channel, Hong Kong.
