Summary:
A pinkish coffinfish with a whitish underside, and deep red on the underside of outer half of the pectoral and pelvic fins, and on the lower margin of the tail. The Redshoes Coffinfish has a lure bearing many pink and whitish cirri, a relatively narrow illicial trough, and the inner mouth cavity, gill chamber and gill arches are greyish to blackish.

Distribution |
Widespread in southern Australia, from Green Head, Western Australia, to New South Wales, and the Lord Howe Plateau in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species is known from the southern Lord Howe Rise, central Challenger Plateau, West Norfolk Ridge, Bay of Plenty, eastern North Island and northern Chatham Rise, to the Louisville Ridge at 720–1100 m depth. Inhabits sandy to rubble substrates on seamounts, ridges and rises at depths to 1200 m. |

Dorsal fin III, 11-12; Anal fin 6-7; Pectoral fin 12-13; Pelvic fin I, 5; Gill rakers (first arch) 3-4 + 14 = 17-18; GR (2nd arch) 14-15; GR (3rd arch) 14-15; GR 4th arch 12. Illicial trough relatively small, slightly concave, width less than diameter of pupil; illicium relatively short, stout; esca with a small central tongue bearing many thin cirri; 1-3 pairs (usually one pair) of spinules on each side of the lateral-line neuromast complex; caudal peduncle thin and tapering. |

Etymology |
The specific name is from the Latin mulleus (= a red shoe), in reference to the distinct deep red ventral surface of the outer half of the pectoral and pelvic fins, and the ventral surface of the anal and caudal fins in fresh specimens. |
