Summary:
A pygmygoby with a midlateral blue stripe, another from the snout along the dorsal midline, blue spots and stripes in front of the eye, on the opercle and beneath the eye, and the caudal fin behind the dark spot is somewhat magenta with diffuse tapering reddish streaks. The second dorsal-fin spine is very elongate and usually extends beyond the end of the second dorsal fin.

Distribution

Clerke Reef, Rowley Shoals, Western Australia, depth 35-40 m. Elsewhere the species occurs in the west Pacific, from the Ryukyu Islands, Japan, the Philippines, to the Solomon Islands, excluding Palau. The species may also occur west to the Maldives.

Features

Dorsal fin VI + I, 8; Anal fin I, 8. 
Bony interorbital 73-100% pupil diameter; fully scaled nape with the anterior rows ctenoid in adults; second dorsal spine that may reach posteriorly as far as the anterior dorsal procurrent caudal fin rays in mature males, usually reaches to at least the middle of the second dorsal fin; often unbranched pectoral-fin rays; the unbranched fifth pelvic-fin ray ~50% the length of the fourth ray.

Colour

Caudal peduncle with a large dark blotch; usually a blue stripe along the lateral midline of the body passing across the dorsal margin of the pupil, another blue stripe in the dorsal midline, a third beneath the eye across the upper cheek, and blue blotches just anterior to the eye, on the opercle, and the posteroventral side of the iris; the base of the caudal fin posterior to the caudal spot suffused with magenta with diffuse tapering reddish streaks.

Etymology

The species is named caudomaculatum in reference to the darkish red caudal fin base.
