Distribution |
Abyssal plain east of Bass Strait, NE of Flinders Island, south-west Pacific, in 4133-4197 m. Elsewhere the species is circumglobal in the Southern Ocean. |
Features |
Dorsal fin 106; Anal fin 95-112; Pectoral fin 16-17; Pelvic fin 2-2; Caudal fin 6-9; Gill rakers (2-3)+(10-13)=13-16; Branchiostegal rays 5-6; Vertebrae 117-138. Body elongate, ovoid in cross-section; head small, depressed in juveniles, more robust and triangular in larger fish; eye small, ovoid; gill opening extending to below pectoral-fin base; mouth inferior, lower lip with slight fleshy lobe; teeth conical, present on vomer and palatines. Head pores very large, preopercular-mandibular pores 8-9; dorsal fin oirigin above pectoral fin, predorsal length 27-36.6% SL; pectoral fin origin below body midline, ventral rays thickened; pelvic fins present. Lateral line ventral, complete. |
Etymology |
The specific name refers to the type locality of the South Orkney Islands off the Antarctic Peninsula. |
