Distribution

Mary River and its tributaries, Queensland. Hemiclonal lineages involving this species and Hypseleotris bucephala are present in the Mary, Maroochy, and Auburn (Burnett) rivers.

Etymology

The specific name moolooboolaensis is derived from the Aboriginal name for the Mary River, Moolooboola (= a misspelling of the name Moocooboola).
