Distribution

Off Scott Reef, north-western Western Australia. Elsewhere the species is widespread in the Indo-West Pacific: South Africa, East Africa, Madagascar, western Mascarenes and Socotra east to Fiji, north to southern Korea and Japan.
Inhabits deep rocky reefs, occurring in shallower depths at lower latitudes.

Feeding

Feeds on fishes and crustaceans.

Species Citation

Epinephelus poecilonotus Temminck & Schlegel 1843, in Siebold, Fauna Japonica Vol. 4: 6, pl. 4A (fig. 1). Type locality: Nagasaki, Japan.
