Summary:
A reddish peristediid with an equilateral-triangular shaped rostral projection, a blackish pectoral fin, mottled soft dorsal, caudal and pelvic fins, outer barbels blackish distally, and no antrorse spines on the bony plates along the upper lateral row.

Distribution

Muirfield Seamount, Coco (Keeling) Islands, eastern Indian Ocean. Elsewhere the species occurs in tropical to temperate Indo-west-central Pacific, from the Western Indian Ocean to Japan and Hawaii at depths of 205–780 m(Fig. 4).

Features

A species of Scalicus with an equilateral-triangular rostral projection, rostral projection width 0.79–1.25 in rostral projection length; 7 (rarely 6 or 8) lipbarbels (having single branch on or near base of filamentous barbel) and 3 (rarely 4) chin barbels; filamentous barbel with 22–39 branches; filamentous barbel lacking membrane between its each base, its length16.2–48.2% SL; posterior-most chin barbel divided into two branches at base (rarely not branched or with three branches); antrorse spines on posterior bony plates of upper lateral row absent.

Etymology

The specific name hians is from the Latin hio (= gaping, open).
