Northern Great Barrier Reef (Yonge Reef, Escape Reef), Coral Sea, Australia. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Western Pacific: West Papau, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and the Ryukyu Islands, Japan. |

Etymology |
The specific name is from the Latin umbrosus (= shady). in allusion to the relatively dusky coloration. It also references the species previous confusion with P. rosae, in the sense it was shaded from view. |
