Summary:
A bluish-grey angelfish becoming brownish to blackish below, with most of the head and bases of the pectoral and caudal fins yellow, a black snout, whitish or pale blue lips, the outer half of pectoral and caudal fins black, and a blue rim around the eye and gill cover. Small juveniles have a broad white band behind the head.

Distribution

Occurs from the southern Great Barrier Reef and southern Coral Sea, Queensland, to central New South Wales; also Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in New Caledonia. Adults inhabit outer rocky and coral reefs, usually at depths below 20 m. Juveniles often occur in shallower protected lagoons, harbours and bays, especially in areas with rich soft coral growth.

Feeding

Feeds on sponges and tunicates.

Biology

Forms monogamous pairs.

Fisheries

Occasionally collected for sale in the aquarium industry.
