Summary:
A pale silvery ribbon-like hairtail with the body tapering to a point, and an evenly convex dorsal head profile that appears somewhat crest-like. After capture, the body becomes silvery-grey with dark cloud-like patches.

Distribution

Cape Cuvier, Western Australia, to the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland, and north of Townsville, Queensland, to off Ulladulla, New South Wales. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, Indo-west Pacific.

Features

Dorsal fin V, 126-144; Anal fin II, 47-50.
Body extremely elongate, compressed and tapering to a point. Pelvic fins reduced to scale-like processes; caudal fin absent. Lateral line running almost straight mid laterally nearer the ventral than the dorsal contour.
