Summary:
A large brown flounder with irregular dark spots on the head, body and fins. The pectoral fin is present as a small rudiment on the eyed side, and is absent on the left side. The species has both eyes on the left side of the head, and the pelvic fin on the eyed side is much larger than that on blind side.

Distribution |
Off Macquarie Island, Heard and MacDonald Islands, and off Mawson to off Wilkes Land, Australian Antarctic Territory. Elsewhere the species occurs in the sub-Antarctic to Antarctic, Southern Ocean. Inhabits sandy and muddy areas on the continental shelf and slope. |

Dorsal fin 104-128; Anal fin 89-109; Pelvic fin 6-8 (left), 4-6 (right); Gill rakers 5-9 + 9-16; Lateral-line scales 100-159; Vertebrae 13-16 + 38-42 = 52-56. Body depth 1.8-2.8 in SL, head length 3.0-4.4 in SL; greatest eye diameter longer than snout, 27-42% HL; upper jaw length equal to or greater than eye diameter, 31-43% HL. Gill rakers on lower limb of first arch short, slender, with pointed tips. Most body scales with ctenii directed posteriorly (lying flat against body). |

Etymology |
The specific name is from the Latin maculata (= spotted), in reference to the "rounded irregular darker spots" covering the body and fins of the eyed-side. |
