Genus Acanthopagrus


Summary:

An Indo-West Pacific genus with 20 species, 5 of which occur in Australian waters. Species have several pairs of large peg‑like canines at the front of each jaw and an outer row of stubbier canines along each side with several inner rows of rounded molars at the rear; molars only slightly enlarged posteriorly in each jaw. The dorsal fin has with 12–15 (rarely 10–11) segmented rays; the anal fin has 8-10 segmented rays, and the second anal-fin spine is much more robust and distinctly longer than the third. The scales are mostly scales ctenoid, rough to touch, and are absent from the interorbital space.
