Order GONORHYNCHIFORMES

Common name: Beaked salmons, milkfish
Summary:

A small order of primarily freshwater fishes with two suborders: the Chanoidei with one family and the Gonorhynchoidei with three families (Nelson 2006). Fink & Fink (1996) discussed relationships. Nelson (2006) provided a summary of recent work and demonstrated monophyly of the group. Near et al. (2014) found the genus Gonorynchus to be the sister lineage of all other gonorynchiform fishes. Each suborder contains only a single family in Australia.

Species have a small mouth with jaws that lack teeth, and pelvic, dorsal, and anal fins positioned far back on the body.
