Distribution

Heard & McDonald Islands, Macquarie Island and Prydz Bay (Australian Antarctic Territory). Elsewhere the species is circumglobal in cold temperate and Subantarctic waters of the Southern Hemisphere.

Etymology

Macrurus holotrachys Günther 1878, Annals and Magazine of Natural History 5 2(2, 22, 28): 24. Type locality: East of Rio de la Plata mouth, Challenger station 320, depth 600 fathoms.
