Summary:
A cardinalfish with a narrow triangular dark bar across the cheek, a dark saddle (sometimes indistinct) below the second dorsal fin, usually a few indistinct pale bars on the side, a broad dark band around the caudal peduncle connected above and below to the caudal fin, and no dark margins along the outer caudal-fin lobes.

Distribution

Recorded from the northern Great Barrier Reef to Moreton Bay, Queensland. Elsewhere, the species occurs in the Western Pacific: Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines to Australia, Papua New Guinea and Fiji.

Features

Dorsal fin VIII, 9; Anal fin II, 8; Vertebrae 24. 

Colour

Head, body and fins without stripes; head with dark narrow triangular cheek mark from eye to angle of preopercle, lachrymal and anterior infraorbital with yellowish mark, iris brownish with white inner ring; head and body bronze to brownish background occasionally with a few faint pale bars, saddle under second dorsal fin; caudal peduncle with a complete dark caudal-peduncle mark, the bar less intense below pored lateral-line scales, pale region just anterior to peduncle mark not reaching to posterior base of second dorsal fin but reaching anal fin; first and second dorsal fins uniform dusky, pectoral pelvic and caudal fins pale (Fraser 2008).

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin 'viria' meaning bracelet, in reference to the band around the caudal peduncle.
