Summary:
A relatively deep-bodied brownish-grey Chromis with a large yellow spot at the pectoral-fin base, dark outer caudal-fin rays, white pelvic and anal fins, elongate dorsal, anal and caudal-fin filaments, and whitish or translucent areas on the rear of the dorsal and anal fins.

Distribution

Recorded in Australia from offshore reefs of Western Australia (Rowley Shoals and Scott Reef), Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea, and the northern Great Barrier Reef and reefs in the Coral Sea, to Hoskyn Island Reef, Queensland; also Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the eastern Indian Ocean, and Lord Howe Proince in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere, the species occurs in the tropical, east-Indo-west Pacific, from the Indo-Australian Archipelago to Samoa and the Marshall Islands.

Inhabits coral-rich areas in clear lagoons and on seaward reefs at depths between 5-70 m, usually below 20 m.

Feeding

Feeds on zooplankton.

Biology

Forms pair during the breeding season. Females lay demersal adhesive eggs that are guarded and aerated by the male parent until the larvae hatch.
