Summary:
A pale brownish to blackish cardinalfish, with a large ocellus on the first dorsal fin, 3 broad dark bars radiating from the eye, dusky rounded fins, and a distinct lateral line.

Distribution

Northern Great Barrier Reef to Southport, Queensland; also reefs in the Coral Sea, Territory of Ashmore and Cartier Islands, Timor Sea, Christmas Island, and Cocos (Keeling) Island. Elsewhere, the species is widespread in the Indo-west central Pacific, from Africa to the Marshall Islands, north to southern Japan and south to the Great Barrier Reef and New Caledonia; also Tonga and throughout French Polynesia.
A secretive species that shelters among rocks, coral rubble or clumps of brown algae in shallow lagoons, tidal pools, bays and harbours.
