Summary:
A relatively large pinkish to pale reddish-brown cardinalfish with 8-9 narrow stripes following the scale rows along the side, a large black spot near the base of the second dorsal fin, a smaller black spot on the base of the anal fin, a dark diagonal bar across the cheek, and a small black spot on the upper part of the gill cover. The Manyband Cardinalfish may have three indisctinct vertical bars on the sides.

Distribution

Shark Bay, Western Australia, around the tropical north, to Wide Bay, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Aru Islands Indonesia (the type locality).
Shelters in reef crevices and around isolated rocky and coral outcrops.

Features

Dorsal fin VII + I, 9; Anal fin II, 8; Pectoral fin 15-16; Lateral line scales 23-25; Gill rakers (first arch) 4+12.

Similar Species

The Manyband Cardinalfish has no vertical bars, nor an ocellated spot on body.

Etymology

The specific name brevicaudatus is from the Latin brevis (= short) and caudatus (= tailed), in reference to the short caudal fin of this species.
