In Australia, this species was previously known as Scolopsis vosmeri, which occurs in the northern Indian Ocean and Andaman Sea to western Indonesia, East Malaysia and Brunei.

Dampier Archipelago, Western Australia, to Cape Arnhem, Northern Territory. Elsewhere the species occurs in the western Pacific Ocean from western Indonesia and north-western Australia, east to the Philippines and north to southern Japan.
