Distribution

Known from continental shelf waters of the Northwest Shelf (Western Australia) and off Townsville to off Brisbane (Queensland). Elsewhere, widespread in tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-West Pacific.

Features

Meristic features: Dorsal-fin rays 68-72; Anal-fin rays 55-57; Pectoral-fin rays 5; Lateral-line scales 70-75; Abdominal vertebrae 10; Caudal vertebrae 29.

Size

To 11.5 cm TL.

Feeding

Carnivore - feeds on small benthic invertebrates.

Fisheries

Taken as bycatch in commmercial fisheries.

Conservation

IUCN Red List status: Samariscus huysmani has been assessed as Data Deficient on the 2011 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species
