Genus Urocampus

Summary:
An Indo-Pacific genus with 2 species, one in Australia. Body very elongate, trunk shallow; head aligned with body; snout short; median dorsal snout ridge more or less straight in adult females, not elevated to or above dorsal rim of eye, ridge convex and usually elevated to or above horizontal through dorsal rim of eye in adult males; longitudinal ridge crossing half or more of opercle in subadults and adults; STR and STAR continuous; ITR and ITAR discontinuous near anal ring; LTR not continuous with tail ridges; eggs brooded in enclosed pouch on underside of tail just behind anal fin; tail not prehensile but very slender and flexible; dermal flaps usually abundant on body and head; dorsal fin slightly closer to tip of snout than tail, with short base, origin on 5th–8th tail ring; anal and caudal fins tiny; pectoral fins present.
